Portrait of Dr. Jerry A. Smith

Dr. Jerry A. Smith has spent more than thirty years building software systems and the organizations that build them. He began in the U.S. Navy, where from 1980 to 1991 he served as a nuclear engineer operating submarine reactors, flew carrier-based jets, and worked as a software engineer on research and development of airborne missile targeting systems at China Lake and San Diego.

He went on to lead engineering as chief technology officer at several software companies, then built artificial intelligence practices from nothing inside six global firms, including Cognizant, where he created the company's first global data science practice, and Capgemini. Most recently he has designed and run AI systems in production in financially regulated environments, including a permission-aware decision-memory system for a private equity firm.

He is the founder and principal of Verity Vantage Group, a production-AI engineering and advisory firm, and he designed the graduate software engineering course from which this book grew. He holds a PhD and an MS in computer science from Nova Southeastern University and a BS in electrical engineering from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.

He writes Building Minds, a newsletter on AI strategy and cognitive architecture, and is the author of The Enterprise Cortex and the novel Tulpamancer: Edge of Chaos. He lives in Shallotte, North Carolina, with his wife, Victoria.
